Cooked Food, Be Gone!
Eliminate your cooked dinner dish
Whew! The last four weeks just flew on by, didn’t they? I bet it’s hard to believe how much raw food you are eating now compared to one month ago.
This is the last lesson and I’m sure you know what that means: NO MORE COOKED FOOD!
For the 5th and final step, you will be eliminating *all* of the cooked foods from your diet. This means that you will no longer be having a cooked dish for dinner after your fruit and veggie meals.
Yikes!
This step really sounds more difficult than it actually is. You’ve already been getting the vast majority of your calories from fruits and vegetables.
The cooked meal was there as sort of a security blanket. Having this cooked meal has allowed you to get used to eating a raw dinner, while still having the comfort of a “normal” cooked dish.
Physically speaking, I’m sure you found out how difficult it is to find room for any dense cooked meal with lots of water-rich raw foods in your belly!
Don’t be nervous about this step. You’ve come so far and I know you can do it!
Questions and Concerns
To make you feel even more secure about completely ridding your diet of cooked food, I’ll answer a few commonly asked questions.
#1 Is snacking okay?
Ultimately, your goal is to eliminate snacks. Eating in between meals means that your body has to spend more energy digesting food. This is energy that would be better spent on something like going for a walk or playing tennis.
You know how important being active is to your health, right?
If you do feel the need to snack between meals, make sure it’s on healthy sweet fruit. If you eat enough sweet fruit during your meals, your snacking habits will disappear.
#2 What about eating late at night?
When I first went raw, I woke up almost every night wanting more food. At first, I would cave and go for something cooked.
I eventually learned that if I had some fresh fruit handy, I would be fine. I started keeping grapes on hand at all times and that hit the spot. A bowl of grapes at 3am became a “raw” saver during my first few weeks raw.
However, once I began increasing the amount of food I ate during the day, I no longer woke up hungry in the middle of the night. This is ideal because in order to have optimal digestion and wake up feeling light and fresh, it is best to finish your last meal a couple hours before bedtime.
For instance, now I like to finish my dinner meal before 8pm and hit the hay by about 10pm.
Remember, this is a transition. If you are finding it hard to eat enough before bedtime, do what I did. Keep easy-to-prepare fruit on hand for those nighttime noshings.
#3 What if I get off track with my diet?
No sweat! Just climb right back on that raw food wagon and try again. Nobody is perfect and 99.9% of people will stray in the beginning. That’s totally okay and completely expected.
This is a learning process. You have to remind yourself that *it’s just food* and that there are more important things in life. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
