She also suggested that I post an article about it with regards to raw foods, so that’s what I’m doing.

Great suggestion, Caryn!

What’s Decision Fatigue?

According to the author, decision fatigue:

…helps explain why ordinarily sensible people get angry at colleagues and families, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket and can’t resist the dealer’s offer to rustproof their new car. No matter how rational and high-minded you try to be, you can’t make decision after decision without paying a biological price. It’s different from ordinary physical fatigue — you’re not consciously aware of being tired — but you’re low on mental energy.

It’s all about will power. The more decisions we make, the more our will power weakens and the less discerning we are.

And when we’re less discerning, we tend to respond in either one of two less-than-optimal ways:

We make a rash decision or

We do nothing

#1: Rash Decision

You’ve had a long day, you’re tired, and you’re hungry. Instead of expending the little bit of extra energy it takes to make a healthy and delicious raw meal, you take the shortcut. You make a rash decision and go for the cooked leftovers in the fridge.

This actually helps explain why many of us feel like giving in to our cravings is beyond our control. It isn’t that we lose control, it’s simply that we don’t take the time to stop and think. We behave rashly and before we know it, we’re chowing down on any unhealthy foods we can get our hands on.

This also helps to explain why dietary discretions tend to occur later in the day, when you’re worn out from all the decision-making of the day.

#2: Do Nothing

You’ve read so many different books, listened to so many different lectures, and watched so many different videos that you can’t discern one raw food guru from the next. You feel overwhelmed.

What do you do? You do nothing. Instead of getting healthier, you stick with the same diet that, while familiar, has left you unhealthy, overweight, and unhappy.

The Sweet Solution

Oddly enough, the solution really IS is sweet! When researchers gave participants lemonade mixed with either sugar or a no-calorie sweetener, here’s what they found:

Again and again, the sugar restored willpower, but the artificial sweetener had no effect. The glucose would at least mitigate the ego depletion and sometimes completely reverse it. The restored willpower improved people’s self-control as well as the quality of their decisions: they resisted irrational bias when making choices, and when asked to make financial decisions, they were more likely to choose the better long-term strategy instead of going for a quick payoff.

This relationship between glucose and willpower also helps explain why people consuming your typical high fat, low fruit raw food diet struggle to stick with it. It’s next to impossible to go raw and avoid temptation when your body and mind are screaming for glucose! It then becomes all to easy to make a rash decision and just go for the cooked food.

This connection also explains why many raw foodists want high-carb foods like bread, pasta, and pastries when they’re having a craving. They need glucose!

So how do you avoid decision fatigue on a raw food diet? The answer is ridiculously simple and satiating.

Simply eat more fruit! In fact, the bulk of your calories should come from fresh fruit. The fruit will provide all of the glucose you need to stay alert, energetic, and focused, as well as tons of necessary nutrients to keep you healthy.

For more on following a healthy and sustainable low fat, high fruit raw vegan diet, be sure to sign up for my report The 4 Principles of a Healthy Raw Diet at the link below:

==> www.fitonraw.com

More Tips and Tricks

Even if you follow a raw food plan that’s glucose-rich, you’ll still come across decision fatigue now and again. Luckily, I’ve got a couple of simple tips to help you out:

#1: Be Prepared

The absolute best way to avoid rash decision-making is by being prepared.

For instance, if you know it’s going to be a long day, prepare dinner ahead of time. Chop up all the ingredients for a big salad in the morning or even the night before. Then when you get home, all you have to do is blend up a tasty dressing and start eating.

I know what you’re thinking. Raw food eating is supposed to be simple. You shouldn’t have to be burdened by meal plans, blah blah blah.

Well, you’re wrong. If you want to succeed on raw (or ANY diet), you need to be prepared. That means having at least some idea about what you’ll eat each day and making sure you have that food available, especially when you are transitioning.

#2: Pick a Plan and Stick With It

The best advice I can give when going raw is to pick one raw food plan and stick with it. Pick one raw food guru, follow their advice for 30 days, and see where it takes you.

I know, I know. You want to make sure you have all the knowledge available before you get started. You want to do this right.

Well, guess what? Even if you research going raw for months, you’re still going to make mistakes when you actually take action and go raw. Knowledge is power, but reading a book or watching a YouTube video won’t earn you any experience points.

How do you know how much food you need if you don’t eat raw? How do you know what a truly ripe peach looks, smells, and tastes like if you don’t see, smell, and taste it for yourself? How do you know which fruits and greens are your favorites if you don’t actually eat any fruits or greens?

Quite frankly, you don’t. And you won’t ever know until you take action and actually go raw.

Your Thoughts?

Got any tips for avoiding decision fatigue? I’m sure you’ve heard of these solutions: eat less meat, cut down on sugar, eat more fiber, drink lots of water, exercise everyday, on and on.

I’m here to tell you that you can significantly increase your energy by doing just one simple thing. But first, let me dispel a few myths…

Do Nuts and Protein Bars REALLY Increase Your Energy?

Have you seen those Emerald nuts commercials? You know, the ones where the people fall asleep during important tasks because they haven’t got enough energy. Then a friend gives them some nuts and woo hoo, they have energy galore!

I want to let you in on a little secret: there is *nothing* you can eat that will increase your energy. Not fruit, not vegetables, and certainly not nuts!

Digestion is a process in your body and it *requires* energy. That’s why everyone retires to the couch after a large Holiday meal. Your body is working overtime to process all of the food, leaving you too worn out to do anything else!

Which brings me to my next point: there are certain foods that require *less* effort from your body to digest. Raw fruit, for instance, only takes *minutes* to go through the full digestive process.

But again, even raw foods do not give you energy. It just uses up less, providing you with optimal fuel and letting you retain more of your own energy than if you had eaten, say, a bologna sandwich.

What About Exercise?

If simply eating an apple requires energy, you know what exercise does, right? Yep. Exercise saps your energy!

Think about it: you decide to go for a jog. You spend a good 30 minutes on the track. How do you feel afterwards? You feel a little worn out, right? And probably a little hungry, too.

With that said, making exercise a regular part of your life will *improve* your energy expenditure in the long run.

Because your body is now engaging in more intense periods of movement, average daily tasks will become even easier to perform. They will require less energy from you than they did before an exercise routine was implemented.

Exercising also makes the *true* energy booster even more efficient…

So What Does Give Us Energy?

Good question!

The *only* thing that we can do to actually restore our energy is…

*SLEEP*

That’s right. Good ole’ sleep. It’s easy to do, you can do it in the comfort of your own home, and it’s free! What’s better than waking up naturally after a good night’s rest?

When you sleep, your body goes into hibernation mode. Because you are not moving, eating or thinking, you are creating less of a demand on your body. All of your organs, muscles and nerves are given the chance to rest and recover.

How much sleep do you need? It’s an easy answer, but you might not like it…enough.

You need enough sleep.

You want some numbers? The general guideline is 8-10 hours every night. However, this changes from person to person. Someone who is training for a marathon will need much more sleep than someone who only goes for long walks on the weekends.

Tips For Getting Quality Sleep

As evidenced by the vast number of sleeping pills and potions used by the general public, people have a hard time getting quality sleep.

Here are some easy tips to help you *finally* get some sound sleep:

Go raw! As stated earlier, eating healthy raw foods require less energy, allowing you to sleep much more soundly.

Don’t eat too late. Try to finish your last meal a few hours before bedtime so that your body is not digesting food while you are asleep.

Be a yogi! Just a few minutes of yoga, or any kind of light stretching, is a great way to calm your body and mind before sleepy time.

Start an exercise routine. You will be amazed at how wonderfully exhausted you feel when bedtime rolls around.

Turn off the computer or put down the laptop at least an hour before you go to sleep. I’m really bad about this sometimes, but it truly makes a difference.

As far as getting *enough* sleep, you simply have to get into the habit of doing so. The easiest way to do this is to gradually add on time to your nights. For instance, start by going to bed just 20 minutes earlier than you usually do. Add 20 more minutes the following week, and so on.

You can also try just adding a few restful moments throughout your day. That means no TV, no computer, and no phone! While this isn’t as restorative as sleeping, it does provide your body with a little bit of recovery time.

I have one last little point to make. If you wake up in the morning exhausted, that’s because you are! The absolute best thing you can do is go back to bed. Even if it means skipping exercise, go back to bed.

Yes, it’s that important.

What’s Your Sleep Schedule?

I’m an early to bed, early to rise type of gal and I feel best with about 9 hours of sleep a night. How about you?

Leave your comments below!

Go raw and be fit,

Swayze

P.S. Can’t get enough quality sleep because you can’t stay raw? Can’t stay raw because of crazy cooked food cravings?

I’ve got just the thing…

“How to Conquer Your Cooked Food Cravings Once and for All”

A Guide for Destroying Cravings on a Raw Food Diet

www.CookedFoodCravings.com

Click on the link below to learn more and purchase your copy today:

==> www.CookedFoodCravings.com

10 Benefits of a Raw Food Diet (Revisited)

Budget

Digestion

Energy

Food Combining

Hair

Illness

Motivation

Raw Food Benefits

Skin

Sleep

Teeth

Weight Loss

Today I’m revisiting a Fit On Raw post that I originally published in June of 2009. It’s an oldie, but a goody!

10 Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

Are you really eager to go raw, but just can’t seem to muster up the courage to get started?

These are some of the top 10 benefits of the raw food diet that most every raw foodist has experienced. If this doesn’t convince you to go raw, I just don’t know what will!

#1: Improved Digestion

If I had to give you my top raw food benefit, improved digestion would be it. It is the one result that almost every single person who attempts a healthy raw diet experiences.

Not only that, but it usually occurs very quickly. Many indigestion symptoms go away in just a few short days, if not less. Whether you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or just the occasional upset tummy, you will see major improvements after going raw.

However, if you continue to abuse the #1 food combining rule, then your results will not be as great. No amount of raw food can undo the effects of the sugar-fat combo.

#2: Permanent Weight Loss

Hmmmm…maybe permanent weight loss should be the top benefit?

I don’t think it’s going too far to say that close to 99.9999999% of people struggle with their weight at some point in their lives. Many of us go on diet after diet after diet, hoping that we will see *some* kind of positive change in our weight.

Unfortunately, the only change that most of us witness is a higher number on the scale. And if we do happen to lose weight, it’s usually at the expense of our health (i.e. calorie restriction, dangerous diet pills, frozen food programs, etc.) and typically comes back to haunt us sooner or later.

On the other hand, eating a healthy raw food diet allows you to lose weight *permanently* while improving your health substantially. Plus, you get to eat *pounds* of food on a daily basis, without any gain or the guilt!

#3: More Energy

Unlike what you read/hear from many well-known raw foodists, raw foods do *not* give you energy. Nothing you eat does, whether it’s a burger or a banana. Eating food of any kind *requires* energy, just as everything else that you do during the day requires energy.

What makes following a healthy raw vegan diet truly special is that it requires less energy to process inside your body. 2 pounds of grapes literally takes *minutes* to be fully digested by the body. This is opposed to cooked foods, or even a complicated fatty raw dish, which take hours to be digested.

The one *true* energy provider is sleep, which brings me to benefit #4…

#4: Better Sleep

Since I’ve been raw, I rarely ever feel tired when I get into bed. Even after being raw for so long, I still get ready for bed sometimes and think, “Gee, I’m not going to be able to fall asleep right now. Maybe I should just stay up for a little longer.”

However, I convince myself to get into bed and the moment my head hits the pillow, I feel so relaxed. Within minutes, I’m out.

The best part? When I wake up, I feel completely awake and ready to begin my day. No more groggy mornings for me!

This is a far cry from my bedtime routine from two years ago.

My daily routine was this: feel absolutely exhausted by 4pm. Try not to fall asleep at the wheel on the way to a client’s house. Feel a little better after a 30-minute nap. Feel exhausted again by 7pm. Get into bed still exhausted by 10pm. Remain awake for an hour. Wake up at 7am groggy and grouchy. Repeat.

Yikes, that makes me tired just writing it!

#5: Mental Clarity

I’m sure that many non-raw foodists will disagree with this one. Raw foodists are supposed to be tree-hugging, hippie nut jobs, right?

On a raw food diet, because you are no longer weighing your body down with hard-to-digest cooked foods, you have more energy to use your brain!

Of course, this has a lot to do with sleep as discussed previously.

Because you spend less energy digesting your foods, you sleep more soundly. This means that you have more energy during the day, meaning your thoughts are generally much more clear and your focus greatly improved. You are more mentally, and even emotionally stable.

It’s really a cycle, isn’t it? The more raw foods you eat, the better you sleep. The better you sleep, the more energy you have. The more energy you have, the more mentally stable you are. The more mentally stable, the easier it is to stay raw.

And the longer you stay raw, the healthier you become!

#6: Soft, Smooth, & Clear Skin

To be honest, I’ve always had pretty good skin. I’ve had maybe three blemishes in my entire life. In fact, the worst my skin has ever been was for the first few months *after* I gave up salt! But that’s for another article…

I’m not trying to brag. I just want to be honest. I’m not here to make up crazy transition stories about how going raw made me grow 5 inches taller and gave me the power of flight.

Anyway, I’m sure that many of you struggle with skin problems, whether it’s a blotchy skin tone, dry skin, oily skin, visible pores, blemishes, etc.

You *do not* need an expensive, chemical-laden skin treatment routine that only serves to further irritate your already abused skin. All you need is a good heapin’ helping of water-rich raw fruits and veggies.

And some sunshine couldn’t hurt either.

SIDE NOTE: I did have one skin problem prior to raw: keratosis pilaris (aka chicken skin). Click here to see how I bested it.

#7: Thick, Healthy, & Shiny Hair

I’ve always had really thick hair, but it was very dry and hard to manage before I went raw. The worst part was that I would shed like crazy!

My Mom was always pulling handfuls of my long locks out of the rollers of the vacuum. Yuck!

Now that I eat plenty of nourishing, water-rich foods, my hair is silky and soft. And I’m no longer a shedding machine!

#8: Healthy Teeth & Gums

But aren’t your teeth supposed to rot out of your head when you go raw?

NO! The fact that so many long-term raw foodists have suffered tooth decay is simply a testament to the fact that the mainstream raw food diet *does not work*.

On a healthy raw food diet full of sweet fruit, vegetables and little fat, you will not experience teeth problems. In fact, the condition of your teeth and gums is likely to improve!

The real key is to have a solid dental care system in place and not to make dehydrated foods the base of your diet.

#9: No More Aches, Pains, or Minor Illnesses

How many of you have struggled with “everyday” illnesses and pains such as headaches, migraines, colds, flus, tummy aches, joint pains, muscle cramps, allergies, etc.?

We all have at some point!

Personally, I used to struggle with…

anemia

restless leg syndrome

muscle and joint pains in my legs and feet

seasonal colds about 3-4 times a year (pretty much whenever the weather changed)

the flu every couple of years

headaches

heavy menstrual flows and horrible cramps in my abdomen and lower back that left me in tears

And of course there were the seemingly random and unexplained aches and pains that would crop up every once in a while.

Every one of these has been *completely eradicated* since I went raw. No more headaches. No more colds. Perhaps best of all, no more heavy periods and gut-wrenching cramps!

Sorry guys, but that really is a big one for the ladies.

#10: Save Some Green

When you decide to take your health into your own hands and go raw, you can expect to save some dough in the process.

No more money wasted on unnecessary drugs, supplements or “superfoods.” No more expensive doctor’s fees. No more high insurance rates.

You can finally focus on *you* and spend that extra time and money on the things that actually make you more…well, you!

Still Waiting to Go Raw?

What are you waiting for? Each day that you remain a slave to your aching back, your extra fat, or even your trip to the local pharmacy, is a day that you could be living raw and loving it!

UPDATE

It’s been over two years and these are still my top raw food benefits. But what about you? Which raw results have you enjoyed the most?

Don’t be shy. But how can eating raw foods possibly be unhealthy?!

You may be surprised to learn how easy it is to go raw the wrong way.

In fact, it’s no secret that most raw foodists are eating a diet that isn’t healthy.

Do you fall into this category? Let’s find out…

Here are 5 warning signs your raw food diet isn’t working:

#1: Indigestion

You should not have any signs of indigestion on a healthy raw food diet. If you’re overly gassy, have smelly gas, experience stomach pain, painful/difficult bowel movements, constipation, or any other signs of indigestion, your raw food diet isn’t working.

Check out these 4 indigestion-causing mistakes that will help you figure out what you’re doing wrong.

#2: Too Much Weight Loss

Too much of anything is a bad thing, even when it comes to weight loss. If you’re losing far too much weight and your body fat is approaching an unhealthy level (below 3-5% for men, below 10-12% for women), your raw food diet definitely isn’t working.

You need to gain some fat by eating more calories and build muscle by strength training.

#3: Cravings All The Time

You should not have overwhelming cravings for cooked foods – or even fatty, salty gourmet raw dishes – nor should you be hungry most of the dayl. If you don’t feel satisfied for long after your raw meals and/or are often tempted by “naughty” foods, your raw food diet isn’t working.

For more on how to eliminate cravings for good, check out my cravings crushing program How to Conquer Your Cooked Food Cravings at the link below:

==> www.CookedFoodCravings.com

#4: Prolonged Detox

Most people will experience some detox when transitioning to a raw food diet. Headaches, fatigue, nausea, runny noses, indigestion, and joint pain are pretty common symptoms. But if you are still experiencing these or any others months later without any let up, your raw food diet isn’t working.

Check out this article for more on the “dreaded diet detox” and this one on how to avoid it.

#5: Low Energy

As stated above, it’s normal to experience some fatigue when you first go raw. But if you still have little energy weeks or months after transitioning, your raw food diet isn’t working.

Too much weight loss and low energy go hand in hand. Those raw foodists who are too thin are typically fatigued as well. You need to eat more calories from fruit and limit your fat intake if you want to have abundant energy.

Be Honest

Many raw foodists have a hard time looking at their diet objectively, even when they are experiencing problems directly related to it. But this is what you must do if you want to achieve optimal health.

So if you’ve been experiencing any of the above warning signs, be honest with yourself and take a good hard look at the foods you’re consuming. Here are some questions to ask:

Are you eating enough calories from fruit?

Are you limiting your intake of nuts, seeds, avocados, and other fatty foods?

Are you getting in your greens?

Are you limiting your intake of dried fruits, nuts, and other raw food products?

Are you limiting the amount of salt, spices, and other condiments you consume?

Are you paying attention to other health factors, like exercise, sleep, and sunshine?

If you answered “No” to one of these questions, that’s a good place to start. If you answered “No” to all of them, then you’ve got some work to do!

Go raw and be fit,

Swayze

P.S. All of the problems above can be linked to eating the wrong raw foods.

Most people who struggle with cravings, indigestion, low energy, weight loss, and detox are those eating the mainstream raw food diet. This diet is far too high in fat and irritating condiments and far too low in nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Why is this way of eating raw so popular? Because it’s tasty, that’s why!

But what most people don’t know – and this is exactly what leads to their inevitable “failure” on raw foods – is that a healthy and sustainable raw food diet that DOES focus on fruits and vegetables can be just as tasty!

Don’t believe me? Check out what satisfied customer Shelah said about my healthy raw recipe e-book Low Fat, Fruit Filled, High Fun Raw Recipes:

Dear Swayze,

I am sooooo happy that I decided to purchase your e-book!

You did a fabulous job putting it together. It’s often sold in powder form, in pieces called “nibs, as cacao butter (the extracted oil from the cacao bean), or in chocolate bars.

Cost

Powder: $13-27 per 16 ounces

Nibs: $14-25 per 16 ounces

Butter: $15-25 per 16 ounces

Bars: $6-12 per bar

What (Supposedly) Makes It So Super?

good source of magnesium

lots of antioxidants

gives you energy

Why You Shouldn’t Buy It

Raw cacao as a source of magnesium isn’t too special. Plenty of fruits and vegetables contain this mineral.

For instance, one pound of bananas (only 400 calories) contains 122.5 mg of magnesium. According to the FDA, that’s about 40% of the daily amount required for the average adult female (310 mg).

Antioxidants? A raw food diet is full of ‘em. Just get in enough fruits, greens, nuts and seeds and you will get TONS of antioxidants.

What about raw cacao/chocolate as a bringer of energy? Quite the opposite, actually! Cacao (raw or not) contains the stimulants caffeine and theobromine, making it an energy stealer.

#2: Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is just as it sounds. It’s flower pollen that has been gathered by bees for food.

Cost

$15-25 per 16 ounces

I also found some “special” Australian bee pollen for $44.95…for just 8 ounces!

What (Supposedly) Makes It So Super?

provides all 8 essential amino acids

good source of folate

contains more enzymes and co-enzymes than any other food

Why You Shouldn’t Buy It

The complete protein theory was debunked a long time ago. You don’t need to ingest all the essential amino acids (essential means those that the body does not synthesize and, therefore, must be acquired from the foods you eat) at every meal or every day.

You can get all essential amino acids simply by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables and getting in enough calories.

As far as bee pollen and folate goes, who cares?

Greens are filled with folate, along with bioavailable protein, calcium, iron, and other vital vitamins and minerals. Plus, they won’t blow out your budget.

And enzymes? Big deal!

Enzymes are for the plant, not the person. The only enzymes that can help you digest the foods you eat are the digestive enzymes produced by your own body.

#3: Wheatgrass Juice

Yep, it’s juice made from wheatgrass. The wheat grass is typically sold as a powder or in seed form for you to sprout and juice yourself.

Cost

Powder: $13-20 per 16 ounces

Seeds: $3-5 per pound

What (Supposedly) Makes It So Super?

good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, and magnesium

provides all 8 essential amino acids

lots of enzymes

Why You Shouldn’t Buy It

You’ve probably heard that “one shot of wheatgrass is equal to one kilogram of vegetables” in terms of nutrition. But is this really true?

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find a complete nutritional analysis of wheatgrass. The best I found was for a specific wheatgrass brand, Nutrigrass.

According to their findings, one serving (2 tsp) of Nutrigrass wheatgrass powder contains:

Vitamin A: 2500 IU

Vitamin C: 13 mg

Calcium: 25 mg

Phosphorus: 24 mg

Zinc: 105 mcg

Iron: 2000 mcg

Magnesium: 6.6 mg

How does one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of vegetables stack up? It depends upon the vegetable, but let’s use romaine as an example:

Vitamin A: 104,206.9 IU

Vitamin C: 695.8 mg

Calcium: 554.5 mg

Phosphorus: 763.2 mg

Zinc: 5.4 mg

Iron: 15.1 mg

Magnesium: 599 mg

Wow. Not even close. 2 pounds of romaine is clearly much more nutritious than 2 teaspoons of this wheatgrass powder.

In fact, you could reduce the amount to 12 ounces of romaine and STILL get more vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, and magnesium than you would from a serving of wheatgrass.

Oh yea, and this 2 teaspoon serving is actually 3x more than a typical 1-ounce shot!

Bottom line: There’s no reason to drink disgusting wheatgrass when you can get all the vitamin A, calcium, iron, etc. you need from delicious fruit and greens.

Do I sound like a broken record yet?

And I don’t really need to talk any more about the complete protein or enzyme myths again, do I?

What Say You?

Have you been duped into buying these overhyped products in hopes of a life full of health, energy, and well-being?
