Check out my articles here and here.

#2: Buying Foods You Don’t Like

Do you waste money on produce that you don’t like just because you think it’s good for you? Let me guess, you buy the produce and then it just sits on your counter or in the fridge. A week later, you open up your vegetable drawer to find a rotten, moldy mess.

What’s that sound? Oh right. It’s your hard-earned cash headed straight down the drain.

Here’s a tip: if you don’t like a food, do *not* buy it! Seriously, the chances of you actually eating it are close to nil. Plus, it just takes up space in your kitchen. AND rotting food only makes everything around it turn much quicker!

And are these foods *really* so good for you? Take kale, for instance. Many raw foodists tout this food as being one of the best foods you can eat because of the high level of certain nutrients.

However, kale is harder to digest than other greens like romaine and bib lettuce due to the amount of cellulose it contains. Your body has a difficult time breaking down this cellulose and so much of the food ends up being eliminated. So in the end, you aren’t even capable of utilizing those so-called “better” nutrients!

More importantly, just because a food has more of something does not make it better for you. The appropriateness of a food in one’s diet depends upon how close the nutritional composition of the food is to meeting the consumer’s needs.

Foods that are hard to digest tell us that the make-up of these foods does not align with our own unique anatomy and physiology and so is not optimal.

So stop listening to the raw “gurus” and stick to the foods that you truly enjoy. Your wallet, and your palate, will thank you.

UPDATE: Want to know which fresh raw foods I hate the most? Check it out here.

#3: Buying Exclusively From Health Food Stores

When I first went raw, I bought all of my produce exclusively from health food stores. I figured that since their prices were higher, their produce *must* be higher quality, right?

Wrong. In fact, I eventually discovered that the majority of the produce offered at these high-end stores was the same quality as my local grocery store. Many times it was even the same brand!

The only difference, besides the pricing, was that there was a higher selection of organic produce. However, this produce was usually *horrible* quality and *outrageously* overpriced, even compared to the conventional produce offered.

Instead of buying everything at health stores, try your local supermarket or Walmart. Many stores today sell a wide variety of good produce at decent prices. They even sell decent organic foods, especially greens and peppers.

UPDATE: If you’re going to shop at health food stores, make sure you buy in bulk. Whole Foods offers a 10% discount on produce that you purchase by the case.

And You?

Got any ways to waste money on a raw food diet that you’d like to share? Please leave them in the comments below.

Go raw and be fit,
Swayze

P.S. Here’s another huge money-waster…cooked food cravings. How do cravings for cooked foods waste your hard earned dough?

Because cooked food cravings often lead to cooked food binges, and binges cost money.

Wanna get rid of your cravings, go raw for good, and save some cash? It’s an oldie, but a goody!

10 Benefits of a Raw Food Diet

Are you really eager to go raw, but just can’t seem to muster up the courage to get started?

These are some of the top 10 benefits of the raw food diet that most every raw foodist has experienced. If this doesn’t convince you to go raw, I just don’t know what will!

#1: Improved Digestion

If I had to give you my top raw food benefit, improved digestion would be it. It is the one result that almost every single person who attempts a healthy raw diet experiences.

Not only that, but it usually occurs very quickly. Many indigestion symptoms go away in just a few short days, if not less. Whether you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or just the occasional upset tummy, you will see major improvements after going raw.

However, if you continue to abuse the #1 food combining rule, then your results will not be as great. No amount of raw food can undo the effects of the sugar-fat combo.

#2: Permanent Weight Loss

Hmmmm…maybe permanent weight loss should be the top benefit?

I don’t think it’s going too far to say that close to 99.9999999% of people struggle with their weight at some point in their lives. Many of us go on diet after diet after diet, hoping that we will see *some* kind of positive change in our weight.

Unfortunately, the only change that most of us witness is a higher number on the scale. And if we do happen to lose weight, it’s usually at the expense of our health (i.e. calorie restriction, dangerous diet pills, frozen food programs, etc.) and typically comes back to haunt us sooner or later.

On the other hand, eating a healthy raw food diet allows you to lose weight *permanently* while improving your health substantially. Plus, you get to eat *pounds* of food on a daily basis, without any gain or the guilt!

#3: More Energy

Unlike what you read/hear from many well-known raw foodists, raw foods do *not* give you energy. Nothing you eat does, whether it’s a burger or a banana. Eating food of any kind *requires* energy, just as everything else that you do during the day requires energy.

What makes following a healthy raw vegan diet truly special is that it requires less energy to process inside your body. 2 pounds of grapes literally takes *minutes* to be fully digested by the body. This is opposed to cooked foods, or even a complicated fatty raw dish, which take hours to be digested.

The one *true* energy provider is sleep, which brings me to benefit #4…

#4: Better Sleep

Since I’ve been raw, I rarely ever feel tired when I get into bed. Even after being raw for so long, I still get ready for bed sometimes and think, “Gee, I’m not going to be able to fall asleep right now. Maybe I should just stay up for a little longer.”

However, I convince myself to get into bed and the moment my head hits the pillow, I feel so relaxed. Within minutes, I’m out.

The best part? When I wake up, I feel completely awake and ready to begin my day. No more groggy mornings for me!

This is a far cry from my bedtime routine from two years ago.

My daily routine was this: feel absolutely exhausted by 4pm. Try not to fall asleep at the wheel on the way to a client’s house. Feel a little better after a 30-minute nap. Feel exhausted again by 7pm. Get into bed still exhausted by 10pm. Remain awake for an hour. Wake up at 7am groggy and grouchy. Repeat.

Yikes, that makes me tired just writing it!

#5: Mental Clarity

I’m sure that many non-raw foodists will disagree with this one. Raw foodists are supposed to be tree-hugging, hippie nut jobs, right?

On a raw food diet, because you are no longer weighing your body down with hard-to-digest cooked foods, you have more energy to use your brain!

Of course, this has a lot to do with sleep as discussed previously.

Because you spend less energy digesting your foods, you sleep more soundly. This means that you have more energy during the day, meaning your thoughts are generally much more clear and your focus greatly improved. You are more mentally, and even emotionally stable.

It’s really a cycle, isn’t it? The more raw foods you eat, the better you sleep. The better you sleep, the more energy you have. The more energy you have, the more mentally stable you are. The more mentally stable, the easier it is to stay raw.

And the longer you stay raw, the healthier you become!

#6: Soft, Smooth, & Clear Skin

To be honest, I’ve always had pretty good skin. I’ve had maybe three blemishes in my entire life. In fact, the worst my skin has ever been was for the first few months *after* I gave up salt! But that’s for another article…

I’m not trying to brag. I just want to be honest. I’m not here to make up crazy transition stories about how going raw made me grow 5 inches taller and gave me the power of flight.

Anyway, I’m sure that many of you struggle with skin problems, whether it’s a blotchy skin tone, dry skin, oily skin, visible pores, blemishes, etc.

You *do not* need an expensive, chemical-laden skin treatment routine that only serves to further irritate your already abused skin. All you need is a good heapin’ helping of water-rich raw fruits and veggies.

And some sunshine couldn’t hurt either.

SIDE NOTE: I did have one skin problem prior to raw: keratosis pilaris (aka chicken skin). Click here to see how I bested it.

#7: Thick, Healthy, & Shiny Hair

I’ve always had really thick hair, but it was very dry and hard to manage before I went raw. The worst part was that I would shed like crazy!

My Mom was always pulling handfuls of my long locks out of the rollers of the vacuum. Yuck!

Now that I eat plenty of nourishing, water-rich foods, my hair is silky and soft. And I’m no longer a shedding machine!

#8: Healthy Teeth & Gums

But aren’t your teeth supposed to rot out of your head when you go raw?

NO! The fact that so many long-term raw foodists have suffered tooth decay is simply a testament to the fact that the mainstream raw food diet *does not work*.

On a healthy raw food diet full of sweet fruit, vegetables and little fat, you will not experience teeth problems. In fact, the condition of your teeth and gums is likely to improve!

The real key is to have a solid dental care system in place and not to make dehydrated foods the base of your diet.

#9: No More Aches, Pains, or Minor Illnesses

How many of you have struggled with “everyday” illnesses and pains such as headaches, migraines, colds, flus, tummy aches, joint pains, muscle cramps, allergies, etc.?

We all have at some point!

Personally, I used to struggle with…

anemia

restless leg syndrome

muscle and joint pains in my legs and feet

seasonal colds about 3-4 times a year (pretty much whenever the weather changed)

the flu every couple of years

headaches

heavy menstrual flows and horrible cramps in my abdomen and lower back that left me in tears

And of course there were the seemingly random and unexplained aches and pains that would crop up every once in a while.

Every one of these has been *completely eradicated* since I went raw. No more headaches. No more colds. Perhaps best of all, no more heavy periods and gut-wrenching cramps!

Sorry guys, but that really is a big one for the ladies.

#10: Save Some Green

When you decide to take your health into your own hands and go raw, you can expect to save some dough in the process.

No more money wasted on unnecessary drugs, supplements or “superfoods.” No more expensive doctor’s fees. No more high insurance rates.

You can finally focus on *you* and spend that extra time and money on the things that actually make you more…well, you!

Still Waiting to Go Raw?

What are you waiting for? Each day that you remain a slave to your aching back, your extra fat, or even your trip to the local pharmacy, is a day that you could be living raw and loving it!

UPDATE

It’s been over two years and these are still my top raw food benefits. But what about you? Which raw results have you enjoyed the most?

Don’t be shy. target="_blank">Fruit2day

Back in May of this year, a new product was released in the US by the international company Hero/WhiteWave. Called Fruit2day, this fruit drink is intended to help busy people everywhere increase their consumption of fruit.

What is Fruit2day?

Here is the introduction on the Fruit2day website:

No doubt about it, fruit does wonders for your health.

Can’t argue with that one. Let’s keep going:

But it’s tough to get your fill with an on-the-go lifestyle.

Hmm. Apparently whoever wrote this has never heard of bananas.

Now there’s a new way to eat fruit.

As opposed to chewing and swallowing, I suppose.

It’s not that we changed fruit. We just discovered that dicing-up real fruit into little bits and adding them to rich blends of all-natural juice and puree tastes really, really good.

Yes, we know. It’s called a smoothie. Or, if you want to get all fancy on me, a fruit soup.

So drink it, sip it, chew it and enjoy two servings of fruit like you never have before.

Oh boy…I can’t wait…

Alright…Enough With The Sarcasm

The stuff can’t really be all that bad. I mean it is real fruit, right? And, as the label says, “No added sugars.”

And I’m all for increasing consumer awareness and encouraging people to eat more fruit.

But does Fruit2day really rival the nutrient quality, taste, cost, or portability of fresh fruit?

Juicing

If you take a look at what’s actually in any one of the four Fruit2day flavors, you will notice that the majority of the ingredients are fruit juices.

Here’s the ingredient list for Strawberry Orange:

strawberry pieces

apple juice from concentrate

white grape juice from concentrate

orange juice with pulp from concentrate

banana puree

pineapple pieces and puree

aronia berry juice from concentrate

acerola cherry juice from concentrate

natural flavor

9 ingredients, 5 of which are juices.

The problem with juicing fruit is that vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals are lost in the process. This includes vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and fiber.

And why do we need fiber? Quite simply:

Because of fiber, and because precious food components haven’t been lost through processing, natural plant foods fill you up and do not cause abnormal physiological cravings or hormonal imbalances.

Eating fruits and vegetables with the fiber intact also slows down the rate of glucose absorption, which will prevent blood sugar spikes.

SIDE NOTE: The above quote is from Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Even though it’s advertised as a diet book, Eat To Live is actually more of a collection of scientific studies pointing to the positive effects of eating a diet devoid of animal products. And while Dr. Fuhrman does advocate eating cooked grains, legumes, and veggies, he also encourages unlimited amounts of raw fruit and vegetables in the diet.

Pasteurization

In order for Fruit2day to have any sort of a shelf life without preservatives, the majority of the ingredients must be pasteurized.

So, all of the fruit juices are heat-treated.

And as we already know, heat = nutrient loss.

From Concentrate

And speaking of nutrient loss, what about the fact that the fruit juices included are from concentrate?

A juice “not from concentrate” is first squeezed, then pasteurized, and finally packaged. A juice “from concentrate” has an extra step. The water is removed from the juice and then added back in before pasteurization and packaging.

More steps, more oxidization, more nutrient loss, AND an overall lower quality product.

Natural Flavor?

All four flavors have “natural flavor” listed last on the ingredient list. While I’m sure this is something relatively innocent, it would still be nice to know what exactly this flavoring is.

I better be careful…my “raw foodist” is showing.

Cost

The price of 2 bottles (4 servings worth) of Fruit2day is $3.75. That’s about $.94 per one half cup of fruit.

I’ve bought organic bananas for $.65 per pound, local cantaloupe for $1.50 per pound, organic Valencia oranges for $1.15 per pound…

I’ve even purchased locally grown, pesticide-free, absolutely delicious peaches for $.75 per pound.

Need I say more?

Portability

As mentioned above, the big selling point here is that Fruit2day is extremely portable. You just grab a bottle and go!

But I ask you, can you not just grab a banana and go, or grab an apple and go, or grab an orange and go?

Heck, even melon is pretty portable! Just cut one up in advance, store in pre-portioned plastic containers in the fridge, and carry it along with you.

Taste

I haven’t actually tasted this stuff myself. I just can’t bring myself to spend almost $4 on four measly servings of fruit.

And heat-treated fruit juice isn’t exactly raw, now is it?

The Final Verdict

Fruit2day just doesn’t measure up. Sure, it’s fruit. But it isn’t whole, nor is it fresh or even raw.

And as far as Fruit2day’s ability to convince the masses to eat more fruit, I am skeptical. I’m not a penny pincher, but I just can’t see the average Joe Shmoe shelling out $3.75 for two small bottles of chunky fruit smoothie.

Not when you can get a Milky Way bar for under 2 bucks.

But what do you think? Is Fruit2day a worthy competitor of fresh fruit or merely the sad remains of its nutrient-packed opponent? Leave your comments below!

Go raw and be fit,

Swayze

href="http://www.fitonraw.com/2009/06/3-ways-to-waste-money-on-a-raw-food-diet/">3 ways to waste money on a raw diet.

You didn’t think I would leave you with that, did you? Come on, I’m nicer than that.

Here are my top 3 easy ways to *save* money on a raw food diet.

#1: Buy in season

To put it bluntly, food in season costs less.

Here’s an example. When cantaloupes are in season during the summer months, I can find them for as cheap as $1.50. When they are not in season, they can cost as much as $3 PER MELON! And we’re talkin’ really tiny melons with hardly any flavor.

Because the food is at its prime, you run less of a risk of choosing yucky fruit when you buy in season. For instance, if I happen to buy cantaloupe during the spring, 9 times out of 10 I have to throw it out. But during the summer, almost every single fruit that I choose is a taste sensation.

And that’s another point to bring up. Food that is in season tastes a MILLION TIMES better than food that is not in season. You really cannot go wrong buying seasonal fruit.

#2: Buy in bulk

As I stated in Tuesday’s article, I used to buy all of my produce at expensive health foods stores. Not only was the fruit expensive, the quality wasn’t even that great!

Luckily, I soon stumbled upon an awesome resource for buying high-quality produce at great prices.

*Buy-In-Bulk Stores*

Buy-in-bulk stores are stores that offer a variety of goods at discounted prices. Because you buy the goods in bulk, forgoing packaging charges, you are able to save some green.

Costco and Sam’s Club are two examples of these stores. You need a membership for both of these. I have both in my area, but I only shop at Costco. The price is $50 per year and the savings I get more than make up for the annual fee.

Plus, the quality is amazing compared to the supermarket! I get awesome Ataulfo mangoes each Spring, a variety that isn’t available anywhere else in my area!

Currently, I buy the majority of my food from buy-in-bulk stores.

*Wholesale Distributors*

If you *really* want to save some moolah, visit a nearby wholesale produce distributor. These are the companies that supply produce and other foods to your local grocery stores and health food shops. There are even organic specific distributors in some areas.

To locate a distributor in your area, simply do a google search for “wholesale produce distributor.” You can also talk to the produce department at your grocery store, health food store, etc. to see where they get their produce.

Make sure to contact your distributor *before* you actually head over there to load up. Some distributors do not sell to the public, while others have specific dates and times for you to come and shop.

I know buying from a distributor seems like a lot of work, but anything is a little bit time consuming when you first start out. I’ve just started this process myself, and it really isn’t that hard.

Once you’ve found a distributor that you like and set up a routine, it’s no different than a weekly trip to the supermarket.

Here is a great, in depth article on buying wholesale produce from someone with lots more experience on the subject.

*Other ways to save*

If you do not have a Costco in your area and cannot find a distributor to buy from, you can always look to your local Walmart or grocery store. Some stores do offer small discounts for buying in large quantities. However, I have never had any luck with this in my area.

Another option is to join a local co-op. As a member of a co-op, you are presented every week with a list of available produce from local farmers. Generally, you can then order from that list and pick up your food on a specific day of the week. Some co-ops also have annual membership fees.

Joining a co-op also means that you are contributing to local produce farmers, which brings me to the 3rd way to save…

#3: Buy local

The easiest way to buy local produce is to visit your area’s farmer’s market. Almost every city has one and they generally start in April or May and last until October or November.

There’s a great farmer’s market downtown where I live. It happens every Saturday from April to October and has really become a nice outing for my family and I.

Now, I know that many of you will argue that farmer’s markets will actually *cost* you money because the food is more expensive.

With some items, especially free-range meat and dairy products, you are right. But I have found that fruits and vegetables are generally comparable in price to what is offered at the supermarket. And almost every farmer offers a discount on bulk buys.

And that’s where you really save money. Think about it: most people buy very little when they shop and so that’s what the farmers expect. All of a sudden, you start showing up to the market every week to buy *pounds* of produce.

I guarantee you every farmer will be *dying* to offer you a discount just so you’ll buy from them.

An even better way to buy locally is to go directly to the farms themselves. I have a wonderful orchard near my home that is keeping me loaded with perfect peaches, nectarines, and plums…for only $.75 per pound!!!!!!

This is the lowest cost I have ever seen peaches. And nothing beats the added benefit of picking fruit myself that was growing just 30 minutes from my home.

If you have a produce farm nearby, I highly recommend that you give them a call. That way, you can set up a shopping day that is convenient for you and start building a great relationship with the people who grow your food.

But the best part about buying locally? The food is super fresh, always in season, and extra tasty!

Where to Get Started

If you are feeling a little overwhelmed. Start with your local grocery stores first and see if they offer any discounts. Then, do a search for local farmer’s markets and schedule your weekly trip.

To find a farmer’s market or farm near you, visit Local Harvest and Pick Your Own.

That should be enough to help you find some great produce and really save some green.

Go raw and be fit,

Swayze

depressed because you have been raw for only a short time, but have seen your food bill increase twofold?

Maybe you are hesitant in actually going raw because you have heard all the horror stories of people having to mortgage their house just to keep up their raw lifestyle.

Just kidding…

But many people do in fact find it financially difficult to stay raw. It’s just too expensive!

Well, it certainly doesn’t have to be. Here are 3 ways that many people waste money on a raw food diet.

#1: Buying Supplements and Superfoods

If you are new to the raw food diet, you might not know that many raw food “gurus” promote the use of supplements and superfoods. They believe that a raw diet is incomplete in terms of nutrition. Supplementation and the consumption of superfoods helps to fill in the gaps.

Some common supplements used within the raw food movement include spirulina, hemp powder, and various powders made from greens and fruits. And many of these products are *very* expensive. A pound of spirulina powder costs over $12!

Superfoods, so-called because of their supposed superior nutritional qualities, are also very popular within the raw food movement. These include wheatgrass, goji berries, maca, raw cacao, acai, even bee pollen!

And just like supplements, these foods are very expensive. An 8-ounce bag of dried goji berries costs over $10.

I can buy an entire day’s worth of food for less than that…and I often do!

It really gets my goat when people complain about how expensive the raw food diet is. Of course it is, when you are throwing handfuls of cash at unnecessary supplements and superfoods!

The people advocating the use of these “foods” are simply affirming the stigma that the raw food diet is extreme and difficult to do. I will not name names, but many of the raw food “experts” that promote the use of these products also sell them at very high prices.

It certainly makes you wonder…

If you are eating a healthy raw food diet based on lots of sweet fruit, moderate greens and non-sweet fruits, and low amounts of fat, then you will not need to supplement.

Of course, there are individual circumstances in which supplementation of some form is necessary. This diet is not about dogmatism. If you need to supplement, do it and don’t think twice about it. But in many cases, healthy living is all you need.

Fortunately for me, I discovered an even *better* place to buy great produce. But I’ll save that for a later article…

Until then, throw out those expensive and unnecessary supplements, discard the not-so-super superfoods, and go eat some fruit!

Swayze
