Yes to the first part, but muscle doesn’t burn significant calories:”To make this argument, though, these experts invariably ignored the actual numbers, because they, too, are unimpressive. If we replace five pounds of fat with five pounds of muscle, which is a significant achievement for most adults, we will increase our energy expenditure by two dozen calories a day.” –Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes

If people stick to a non SAD vegetarian/vegan/raw diet and exercise by various means(lifting, running, swimming) then you will see tremendous results no matter what. Of course eating french fries will kill your diet. Don’t blame it on jogging. This video is iffy. I would never tell people not to run. Losing weight should never be your sole motivation anyway. It should be obtaining a healthy lifestyle. If you do that, the weight loss will come.

[..YouTube..] I agree, which is why I said that it doesn’t burn a huge amount in the video. :)

[..YouTube..] I’ve noticed that your approach to weight loss (low calories) is very different from other low fat raw vegans such as Durianrider, Freelee, and Teri Leventhal, among others. They all eat 3000+ calories a day and are very lean, actually losing weight by eating more calories. I’m just getting started on 80/10/10, and I am not sure which route to try in order to lose the 10 pounds I want to lose. What are your thoughts on their methods vs. yours?

Bill K, Reply:

If you follow 80/10/10 diet, weight loss will not be an issue. Just be patient. Weight loss should really be a by-product of getting healthy and not your primary focus. That said, it is nice to look trim.

[..YouTube..] Actually, you said (3:50): “if you couple this with exercise, that’s huge [...] especially if the exercise is strength training”.The advice you give here is well-established to be wrong. Search “Why We Get Fat” for “lumberjack”: “”Vigorous muscle exercise usually results in immediate demand for a large meal,” noted Hugo Rony of Northwestern University in 1940. [...] Thus men doing heavy physical work spontaneously eat more than men engaged in sedentary occupations.”

[..YouTube..] You compare diet to working out by saying diet is more effective. You should never be comparing them in the first place. They should go hand in hand. You say working out requires SO much time and SO much energy like it’s a bad thing. I sort of see where you’re coming from but this video has a mixed message. Mixed enough to where me and you aren’t on the same page and that rarely happens.

[..YouTube..] Don’t be afraid of calories. do you think all the 80.10.10ers got so fit eating 1500 a day? no. Eat UNLIMITED…Basically stuff your face with fruit until you’re fully satisfied. For most grown adults that are sedentary, that would be around 3400 a day..if you are active it’ll be around 4000-5000…Drinking a 1900 calorie banana smoothie is so easy.

[..YouTube..] I normally agree with the stuff you say, but I have to say I strongly disagree with this. Do you want to lose weight or do you want to lose fat? If you want to lose weight, it might be faster just to starve yourself and not exercise. But if you want to lose fat, you NEED to exercise. I was a female of normal weight 128lbs and I did not lose 8lbs until I started exercising too. If you follow a low fat raw vegan diet like you do, you don’t need to worry about “over eating”.

Bill K, Reply:

Sometimes looking fit and being healthy do not go together. Lance Armstrong is a good example in that he looks very fit and yet has had cancer issues. There is some correlation between the “look” and the healthy actuality but they can also be mutually exclusive as well.

Swayze Reply:

Very true. I think we all know at least one person who looks great on the eat-anything-and-everything diet.

Are these people who are following a healthy diet degenerating because of the diet or because our food source is becoming so nutrient deficient. Compare the taste of an heirloom fruit to one that is available at your local market and you can see what is lost through industrial farming. Also, if you compare the list of 25 examples on 80/10/10 to the millions who walk through our hospital doors each hour on a standard diet they are a drop in the ocean. I am not sure how you define the correct diet but certainly 80/10/10 is much better than most other alternatives at creating health.

[..YouTube..] You should never stuff your face with anything. You should eat enough until you are comfortably full (I realize it will feel like your stuffing it in in the beginning). For some that will be 3000+ calories, for others that will be significantly less. There are a lot of factors involved with regard to determining calories burned. The easy way to figure out how much you need is to monitor your weight. Losing too much fat? You’re not eating enough. Gaining unwanted fat? You’re eating too much.

Bill K, Reply:

[..YouTube..] Swayze, great video thank you! I wanted to ask you, I’ve been raw for about a month now and heard that exercise is EXTREMELY important on the raw food diet to assure that you are detoxing all the gunk that is in the bodies systems. I feel really energetic somedays and can do my bike rides or an hour of intense yoga, but somedays I just want to nap and take it easy and don’t feel the raw high that would constitute a crazy workout. What do you think about that? -Much love :)

Miemie Reply:

So you were on the raw diet for 1 month, my i ask you how much kg you have lost so far. I started 2 days ago.

Bill K, Reply:

I would not be obsessed with weight loss. You want to focus on a long term goal of getting healthy. Put the scale away and do not look at it except once a month at the most. Work on getting your food correct and getting into a pattern of eating which works for you. Another thing to remember is that it will take a long time for your body to stabilize on the healthy diet so during the transition your body chemistry will be very eratic at times. This can sometimers give you false signals. Do not react to the day to day but look to the long term trends as a guide. Even though I felt much better almost immedietely, It took me 5 years before I really felt right. Weight is only one indicator in many. I would concentrate on your overal well being as opposed to the outside appearences. It will all come together over time if you stick to it and keep learning. Sawyze’s info is part of that learning.

Right on!, Swayze! The E.L.E.M.’s in the world have personal issues of being “perfect” in their body thinking that is the way to health and happiness! Thanks for the video. As always you are a straight shooter!

I am physically active as a house cleaner in my profession for 6 hrs a day minimum. I love to exercise on top of that. Our bodies are meant to be active and involved in movement. I exercise to build muscle, stamina, flexibility and have a wide range of exercises that I love to do. However Eating Less and Exercising More is the path to physical demise and emotional turmoil for sure.

Thanks for the video.

i agree with what swayze says as i see soooo soooo many overweight, obese people at they gym for months and years on end on a regular daily basis for hours sometimes at a time every day, aaaand they never seem to have lost weight or changed their body physique for the better at all with all that exercising, beeeecause they never ever changed their way of eating, thus they eat lots, feel guilty/bad about it and then spend hours at the gym trying to alieve all that guilt, bad feelings of unhealthy overeating only to just keep on going round and round on the same merry go round. hopefully, one day they will ‘wake up’ and ‘see the light’ bless them

Its not easy to go 100percent RAW. I feel some food was meant to be cooked. Going raw is good. For detoxification. Not all the time. Ofcourse dont overcook. 70percent raw is more like it. Periodically going raw is good. We need self-control.

Bill K, Reply:

Edgar,

I used to think that some cooked food was part of our normal diet as well but as I have learned more I realize that all cooked food is somewhat a sacrifice to good health. Certainly, cooked vegetables is not the worst thing that you can consume but it still is slightly health degrading. If a food (Vegetable) needs to be cooked it was probably not a part of our original diet as it is likely we did not have the power of fire when placed on this Earth. Most of the foods that require heating to be edible create some issues within our bodies. Some are minor issues and some like grains are more serious. Either way if you want optimal health you should strive to eliminate the cooked foods from your diet. That said, I know that when you have eaten a certain way for most of your life it can be difficult to transition to a new way of eating. You can obviously continue to suppliment your diet with some cooked foods but long term you should try and transition away from them to take full advantage of the power of low fat raw foods. I highly recommend Swayze’s book on ending your cooked food cravings. It is very well written and helpful in this regard.

Bill
