Bananas are great for lunch at work – the higher calorie content is really suitable for jobs that require lots of brainpower, so any kind of desk job I guess, but I’m sure people doing manual labor would also feel great if getting a solid source of calories on the job. When I’m not working I’d rather have the more watery fruit like watermelon, melons, ripe peaches, plums, berries – the juicy varieties are really something I associate with rest and relaxation.

@Jabberwock87 I associate super salads with rest and relaxation since that’s what I tend to eat while lounging on the couch at the end of the day. :)

I’ve been vegan for 4 years, and earlier this spring I decided to try 80/10/10. I did it for 2 months, but ended up gaining 15 pounds because my hunger was insatiable without the fat and protein I typically eat. I was consuming far too many calories in bananas and dates because I was hungry all the time. I never had trouble keeping my weight low before this, so I went back to my previous cooked vegan diet. Do you have any advice if I were to try again? I’m sure eating a lot of greens would help

Sue,

Check out Swayze’s book on ending cooked food cravings. It is very well written and should help you better understand what caused your issue.

increase the leafy greens as Swayze says. You can have a big veg juice at breakfast, fruit during the morning, but don’t eat dates, stick to juicy fruits like grapes, cherries, nectarines/peaches etc. Eat more fruit for lunch, then leave it 20 mins and eat a big salad. For supper, again, eat fruit as a starter, leave it about 20 mins then eat big salad for supper. Part of the hunger is not hunger at all, it is just habit and emotions to be dealt with.

many of us have wrote in to suggest you write in summarized point form in addition to the video format which you seem to favour exclusively. you did for a few posts and then stopped, can we please have it in written format too? thank you.

Swayze, I have started a sprout farm. I do one large salad with what I grow in several types of sprouts and micro greens. Another salad that day is lettuce based. I love my greens! I am enjoying participating in supplying myself with part of what I consume. It’s also fun!

That does sound like fun! :)

In order to simplify, since we may be talking apples and oranges (LOL), you recommend fat in a percentage (10%), greens in pounds (which can vary in statistics but overall should be fine) but, it seems a figure of 20% calories in greens and vegetables is what you are recommending?

Swayze Reply:

Definitely not. 20% of 2000 calories is 400 calories, yet one pound of greens is typically less than 100 calories. 1 lb of romaine is 77 kcals, which would be about 4% of total calories.

As I explain in the video, I prefer to go by one pound on average rather than by percentage of calories.

Joseph Reply:

Thanks for the correction. i was just wondering if all greens, 1 pound, overall average, cover everything and it seems it probably does. Additionally, minerals from sea vegetables are mineral rich. I think I heard you mention dulse or kelp flakes. Do you advocate sea vegetables like raw nori, sea palm fronds etc. for healthy minerals? They are loaded and concentrated. Sourcing is critical of course. thanks…..vegandaoist

Where does Celery stand in this picture?
Would it be part of the pound of greens per day?

Bill K, Reply:

Jerome,

I would not get too hung up on the exact amounts. You could include celery in the pound of greens or add it to it. The real point is to get plenty of fruit and make sure to get some greens in your diet as well. Whether it is 1 pound, 1.5 pounds or 0.75 pounds it will not make a huge difference. Celery has a high water content so it really works on both sides a little as a fruit and a veg. Greens are there to give you your minerals almost like taking a vitamin pill. So you center your diet around fruit and then add your vitamin (Mineral) in the form of the dark leafy greens. Remember also to rotate your greens as they have a natural animal repellent built in so if you only eat the same greens, like say spinach, every day you will get a little sick over time. Best to choose a different green each week or even each day if you are so inclined.

how do you get sick from eating same greens bill??? also, i mostly eat only romaine and spinach most of the times, sometimes iceberg and dandelion greens but not very often, so hope i don’t get ill :(

That was an excellent summary of the raw, low-fat vegan diet. As usual, I greatly enjoyed your talk.
I also like to put some carrots and tomatoes into the blender with the greens. What do you think about carrots? I know greens are vital because of their minerals. Do you consider celery to be a “green”? I like blended celery. We have silverbeet here where I live and not spinach. So I blend silverbeet with other items. I can’t eat it on its own. Also, I don’t like raw cabbage etc.
