Don’t Do This If You Want To Go Raw Successfully

Some raw food experts recommend it, but I wholeheartedly disagree…

[..YouTube..] This video is so awesome Swayze! I felt that exactly when I slip up, guilt, frustration, defeat. I’ve been trying to be gentler on myself though and remind myself that it won’t happen overnight so not to be hard on myself. Thank for the tips! :)

[..YouTube..] Thank you for this video! I really needed to hear this. I feel so guilty when I eat something cooked, even though it is vegan. Then, I tell myself to stop being silly and to lighten up; then, I continue to think about it and it makes me crazy! I have been transitioning for a few months now and even though I feel great when I eat raw, every few days I have this urge to eat the delicious food I’m making for my catering business or kids and husband. Thanks for this message!

[..YouTube..] It’s also a really good idea to break it down even further – go vegetarian (cut out meat), then cooked vegan (cut out eggs, dairy), then un-processed cooked vegan (get rid of processed foods), then increasing raw vegan meals with the unprocessed cooked vegan foods. I’ld say spend at least a month on each phase. Because eating consists of habits, and it takes a while to unlearn and relearn habits. xxx

[..YouTube..] I come from a family where the only real food was lettuce and tomatoes for sandwhiches lol. My dad thought there were only like 5 different kinds of vegetables, and I dont think he could name any fruit but oranges and bananas. So going vegetarian was a nightmare lol. I pretty much ate nothing but junk food and bread, so going raw has been interesting lol. Im not completely there yet, I manage a resturant so its hard when you can smell food cooking all day, but if I can do it, anyone can! lol :)

I couldn’t agree with you more on this issue, Swayze. For the general populice transitioning is the best way. However, for those like me, the “special cases” LOL, I went raw overnight literally. Of course I was sufficiently motivated with several illnesses, 2 of which were life threatening. This also was my 2nd stint on this journey with lots of prior experience and education. Above all else I had daily monitoring by my good friend/MD/ND/811′r. 20 years ago I got he and his wife on this path. I had nothing but ridicule here in Boise, Idaho back then and went back to SAD sadly enough.

My rebooting raw mentoring students start with the plan you are advocating here. BUT they have daily monitoring and do daily reports to me. Even when transitioning to raw there are pitfalls as you know.

Hi Swayze,
I had been a vegatarian for many years. Then I tried to follow the blood type diet. Well it wasn´t that health promoting . I guess I needed to eat organic meat then I went raw. But I found out I was low in iron. So I ate some meat. But not successfully. So I returned to vegan and now I eat raw vegan and I feel great but your tip to eat enought fruit has given me the ability to stick to it.

I started my raw adventure in Dec 2009 with Victoria Boutenko’s green smoothies for breakfast, then in Feb 2010, I changed my lunch to fruit. It was April 1, 2010 when I went 100% raw except my cup of black tea with milk. This was an addiction that I had for my entire adult life and I was 65 when I went raw so the tea was a big hurdle to jump. I tried many other things like, soy milk, almond milk, etc. in my tea but that just didn’t get it! So, I finally decided that as my body cleansed from eating a raw diet, eventually when I ran out of milk, I just wouldn’t want to buy another quart. Well, that thinking was perfect. In early July 2010, that’s exactly what happened: I ran out of milk and had no desire to buy more. I haven’t had a cup of tea since and I don’t miss it one bit. So, I learned first hand that as my body cleansed, my taste and dietary choices became healthier. Thanks Swayze, you are a great mentor for me and have been very instrumental in the success of my raw journey. Big hugs!

Great to hear all of these stories. I went through the same all or nothing attempt at lowfat raw vegan and was feeling great for about a month until I tried to add too many raw greens way too quickly (was shooting for the holy grail of 1 lb!). My digestive system just completely shut down one day and I felt awful for several days. Had to resort to magnesium to get things right again but, of course, that put me in the opposite direction…. I just went back to eating cooked foods for about a week just to get my bearings again. I do have to remember my age (52) and activity level (pretty sedentary – only about 30 minutes of brisk walking and some resistance stuff) and that my digestion has never been that great, complicated by a candida overgrowth problem for 30 years. I just don’t have the time in my life (working full time in an office) to do as much exercise as eating a pound of greens requires, if I hope to keep my digestive tract on track. Now my approach is to go much more slowly. I feel the best eating fruit with celery for 3 small fruit mono meals through the day(about 500 cals each), plus an appetizer of fruit while I’m making dinner, then a salad of around 4 oz of easy-to-digest greens with all the other veggie goodies and a very small amount of Bragg’s vinagrette (acv and olive oil – about 2 tsps) if not having 1/3-1/2 avocado with it. I’ve been following this for the last week and feel great again! I know this is not a sustainable level of calories but, for now, I’m working more on feeling good each day and GOING SLOWLY so as not to shut down my digestive pipes by overloading it with raw stuff it has to process. I was definitely forcing things. on my body. And Swayze, I think 500mcg of chromium each day is making a difference! After taking for a week now, I’ve been able to eat 4-5 bananas or a big bowl of watermelon without having stomach pain and those weird “attacks” for 20-30 minutes after eating. By the way, I thought of you yesterday when I had 5 peaches for breakfast. You must be in peach heaven by now! :-)

I did go raw cold turkey, but I haven’t not fallen off the wagon. I’ve given into cravings, some cooked food when fruit is not ripe, not eating greens, not eating enough, etc. I’ve learned that if I “give in” to cravings (nuts are my weakness) I have to not dwell on it and just move on. Something I did that helped me immensely when I went raw was donate my pans/pots to Goodwill. Can’t cook food when there are no pans! So I “forced” myself to eat fruit and/or salad and felt the better for it.

I don’t eat 1lb of greens a day–too much! Dr. Graham (80/10/10) recommends 40-120 of daily calories be from greens, SO I try to get somewhere in between. It’s not that I can’t eat the 1lb of greens, or is not that I get sick eat that much greens, it’s just that I forget/don’t have time to eat my, say, 30 bananas a day, so when it comes to green-eating-time I’m more interested in fruit and/or not feel like eating greens. I don’t berate myself, I just remind myself I gotta eat them before they go bad LOL

Swayze Reply:

40 calories from greens may be enough for someone who needs lots of calories from fruit, but likely won’t be enough for someone who needs only 2000 calories or so. Said person will find it hard to meet his or her mineral requirements on so few greens.

Vegetarian since age 8 but with super high dairy (and bread products). Aiming for vegan since January due to new intolerance/allergy, but with much failing and eating dairy anyway.Decided to try raw for 1 week with no cheating and see what’s up. Was perfect, and not even cravings for the week, loved it, wanted to continue, but keep failing and eating cooked/dairy/sugar/high fat/some combination.Would it be smart to transition now, even though I have already been doing it for over a month?
