[..YouTube..] Pineapples and all citrus does not ripen once it is picked. As far as whatever process is happening to lose its acidity I agree with that, but part of the problem with that is that it also demonstrates a breakdown of all the nutrients in the pineapple. With that being said I do the exact same thing when selecting and eating my pineapple. Great video.

[..YouTube..] @srogers88 True. What people call ripening is really fermentation. That’s why I am going to the tropics to get a truly ripe pineapple. LOL!

[..YouTube..] @srogers88 Great point, thanks for the clarification.

[..YouTube..] Perfect. Thanks so much. Do you use the middle ring of the pineapple or chuck it? I use it, but blended in a smoothie. No idea if I’m doing myself any favors there.

[..YouTube..] @doldrumrecords The core is tough and tasteless (like the core of an apple) so I throw it out.

The cores of the pineapple can be really good if you get a super sweet pineapple like the Kona Sugarloaf (white pineapple) or even some of the really sweet gold pineapples that grow locally here in Hawaii. The core of the white pineapple is so sweet that sometimes it’s sweeter than the pineapple flesh. They are in season during the summer months here.

Really?! So jealous!

Also in the tropics the pineapples that smell fermented are the ones that are overripe. The pineapples here need to be eaten within a couple of days after harvesting (or refrigerated) and they smell SWEET when they are ready to eat.

Last summer we harvested a white pineapple from our garden and it was AMAZING. It was warm from being out in the sun and it was super sweet and PERFECT.

We planted a pineapple patch in our backyard. It takes about 2 years for the pineapples to start producing.

You should come visit! Continental has reasonably priced airfares and they fly directly to Hilo (most airlines have you connecting in Honolulu).

[..YouTube..] Awesome vid! I usually take the top off right away when not too ripe and place upside down on counter so all the juices run to the bottom to ripe a bit more! But unfornutaly bananas are the the only fruit that truly ripens after being picked green. :(

[..YouTube..] @FitOnRaw Can you say why some raw foodist go so well on a 801010 diet and others get tooth problems. and struggle. is it more personality cause they are entangled in their life and clutter in thing which make them hard and stiff like a stone? or ist it something that 801010 need a healthy diet. this is why people from a superfood rawfood diet thrive on 801010. or does it need nordic climate. or tropical climate. whatever chriskendall is living in the north. and is totally shining.

[..YouTube..] @anyuisbjoern Just because you eat low fat, high fruit does NOT guarantee healthy teeth. There are other factors at play, such as good dental hygiene (brushing, flossing, etc.) and eating meals versus grazing all day.

[Reply]

15 anyuisbjoern { 01.20.12 at 1:31 PM }

[..YouTube..] @FitOnRaw micheal arnstein, said he is grazing all day… maybe meals are better choice. thanks. Good dental health. Frederic patenaude uses a oral irigator. Brushing would destroy the week teeth. i can flosh and clean the mouth with herbs and water or essentiell oils.

I look for the least amount of green in the pineapple. Also, if the top leaves can be plucked out easily, then it seems to be ripe. If you pluck the top leaves out in the store, just make sure the owner isn’t watching you!

I’ll have to try that!

18 Norma { 01.20.12 at 1:27 PM }

Hey, I loved your video. I tell my pineapple is ready when the leaves on top twist super easy, like it wants to come off. I’ve had pretty good luck with that. Just thought I would pass that along ;) keep up the great work

[Reply]

19 Suraya { 01.20.12 at 2:29 PM }

Down here in NZ all our pineapples come with the tops leaves already cut off! And probably they have been picked even greener I’m not sure. But no matter what I do I can’t eat more than half a pineapple before it hurts too much. I even leave it until the pineapple is looking and smelling highly offensive lol. The only way around it I’ve found is to use it in a smoothie or eating alternate mouthfuls with another fruit sometimes helps. I’m with you bring on the Tropics fresh ripe pineapples!!:)

Swayze Reply:

That stinks! I would definitely avoid pineapple all together if I were you. Perhaps frozen would be a better alternative.

Thanks Swayze! I like your info about figuring out how to tell if the pineapple is ripe. I will have to do that cut the top off test. That is a great idea!

22 shaadoe1 { 01.22.12 at 7:33 PM }

[..YouTube..] I like to tear the top of and turn the pineapple upside down the day before I cut it open. I find that is pulls the sweetness through the whole pineapple as opposed to just the bottom.

[Reply]

23 FitOnRaw { 01.22.12 at 10:01 PM }

[..YouTube..] @shaadoe1 Really? I tried that a few times but it didn’t seem to make any difference. Maybe I’ll have to give it another go.
