Does Being Vegan Guarantee Perfect Health?

Veggie Burger

When someone finds out that I don’t eat any animal products, a common response is to a quote some study showing how unhealthy vegans are (e.g. our cholesterol levels are too low, our vitamin B12 levels are too low, we get colds all the time, etc.)

My Response? Who gives a crap!

Okay, I don’t really say that. We vegans just aren’t that ballsy. ;)

I usually say something more along the lines of this:

Just because a person is eating a vegan diet, doesn’t mean they’re eating a healthy diet.

Let me show you what I mean.

Vegans Are Unhealthy

It’s true! Most vegans out there are unhealthy. In fact, almost every vegan I’ve come across face-to-face has had serious health problems.

Why? Because they don’t eat healthy foods! They eat lots of processed foods live vegan waffles, mock chicken nuggets, and soy ice cream. These foods are not only heavily refined, but typically full of fat, salt, preservatives, etc.

The french fry is a perfect example of how unhealthy a vegan diet can be. It’s a potato fried in oil and covered in salt and yet it’s 100% vegan!

In other words, most vegans eat junk foods, just like their meat-eating neighbors.

Very few vegans eat a diet predominated by fresh fruits and vegetables. And even the ones who do are still consuming cooked foods, grains, and salt as well.

Raw Foodists Are Too

Yep, this is also true and for the same reason. Most raw foodists do not eat a healthy raw diet. They rely on way too much fat, way too much salt and spices, and way too many dehydrated foods.

Peruse any popular raw recipe website or book and you’ll see that almost every dish contains fatty ingredients like nuts, seeds, avocados, oils, and/or olives in copious quantities.

You’ll also notice that many of them require a dehydrator and/or use dried ingredients (e.g. dried nuts, dried fruit, etc.) and almost all of them contain salt or salty condiments like Nama Shoyu and Braggs Liquid Aminos.

You may experience health improvements relying on such recipes, but you will never experience the optimal digestion, abundant energy, or superior overall health that you are seeking.

Being Healthy is More Than That

While cutting out all meat, eggs, and dairy from your diet and cutting out cooked foods is great, it’s only one piece of achieving perfect health.

That’s because health really isn’t about being vegan. It isn’t about being raw either.

Health is brought about by eating a diet that best aligns with the human specie’s own unique bodily structures and functions. It’s about eating a species-specific diet.

And it just so happens that such a diet is both vegan AND raw. But it’s much more than that.

If you really want to see your health soar to new heights, you must focus on simple carbohydrates. This means eating the majority of your calories from sweet fruits like bananas, mangoes, cantaloupe, peaches, and oranges.

Why? Because humans have evolved to eat lots of fruit. As Dr. Douglas Graham states in The 80/10/10 Diet:

Nutritionally, fruit comes closer to satisfying all of our needs (including, of course, our desire for delicious soul-exalting fare) than any other foods, as meat does for a carnivore. Fruits are replete with the nutrients our bodies require - in the proportions that we need them.

Yes, some vegetables and other foods have “more” of a particular nutrient or class of nutrients, but fruits tends to contain the types and quantities of nutrients our bodies require. More does not mean better.

Humans have also evolved eating little fat. If you want to thrive, you have to limit your fat intake as well.

The Easy Way to Make the Switch

If you’re currently eating a junk food-ridden vegan diet, you can make one simple change that will put you on the right path today.

Ready for it? Okay here it is…

Start each meal with fresh fruit. Yep, that’s it. At least 30 minutes before a meal, have as much fruit as you like. Then finish the meal with whatever you normally eat.

This way, you will automatically start to acquire a taste for fresh produce. You’ll naturally start to crave fresh fruit over processed foods without having to force yourself to give anything up!
