What if Everyone Were a Raw Foodist?

Like many raw foodists, I wish more people would realize the benefits of eating raw vegan and adopt the diet for themselves.

The fact that I have a raw food related mailing list, post regularly on a raw food related blog, and promote raw food related products makes that fact pretty darn clear!

And this obsession concern with the habits of others got me thinking…

What if EVERYONE were a raw foodist?

What if every person on the planet ate a healthy, low fat, fruit-filled raw vegan diet? What if no one ate animal products like meat or cheese or milk, or processed favorites like Doritos, Lucky Charms, or Hershey’s Kisses?

What would the world really be like?

Well, my friends, there’s no doubt that it would be quite a different place…

Grocery Stores Would Look Very Different

Can you imagine a Kroger or Schnucks or Vons or even a Whole Foods that didn’t sell any animal products, grains or cooked foods of any kind?

No packages of chicken breasts. No gallons of milk. No bags of chips, boxes of cereal, jars of pickled veggies, or cans of soup.

And what about the toiletries? Everyone knows that raw foodists naturally smell like morning dew and sunflowers. We don’t need any toxic body washes or deodorant stinkin’ up our stink-free pits. ;)

And everyone knows that raw foodists always look like a bucket full of rainbows so we certainly don’t want any powders, concealers, lip stains, or eye shadows covering up “the glow”.

So we’re left with fresh produce and a few necessities like tooth brushes and toilet paper. Oh, and we can’t forget about the addition of high-quality blenders, spiralizers, and maybe a juicer or two.

Sounds more like today’s local farmer’s market than your average grocery store, huh?

People Would Look Different Too

It’s no secret that people are fat and getting fatter. Today, over 30% of the United States’ population is obese. And other Western/industrialized nations aren’t far behind.

What would this percentage amount to if the entire population ate nothing but raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds?

Oh, I don’t know. How about…ZERO! Would the word obese even exist?

And what about today’s “Western” diseases (aka Diseases of Affluence)? You know, colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, diabetes, heart disease, leukemia, atherosclerosis, etc.?

Would we have any conception of these killer diseases and others like them at all?

And What About Doctor’s Offices?

And if the people are so healthy and fit, what would waiting rooms and hospitals look like?

Well, there would definitely be far fewer family physicians, dermatologists, gastroenterologists, or pulmonary doctors, just to name a few.

And hospitals?

Well, there would still be plenty of those, mostly for emergency situations (e.g. fires, floods, car accidents, etc.). And now that they aren’t filling their beds with stroke sufferer after heart attack victim after chemo patient, doctors can focus their time on what they do best.

You know, stitching you up, setting broken bones, performing blood transfusions, saving your life, that kind of stuff.

What Else?

What else would be different about a world filled with raw food fanatics?

Would restaurants still exist? How would clothing stores change? Would we all wear Vibram Fivefingers? ;)

Go raw and be fit,

Swayze

P.S. While we can’t make others see the light and go raw (nor should we even try), we can definitely adopt a raw food diet for ourselves. And my fruit-lovin’ friend Frederic Patenaude makes this easier than ever to accomplish by clearly explaining the right way to go raw in his book:

The Raw Secrets

The Raw Food Diet in the Real World

And trust me, there IS a wrong way to go raw. Several wrong ways, actually. But don’t worry. With The Raw Secrets, you’ll learn exactly how easy it is to avoid all of those common mistakes and adopt a healthy raw food diet that gives you results.

Good post Swayze, Keep up the good work.
Here are some of the thoughts if everyone started taking Raw food.

1) Everyone will start planting vegetables in their own homes.
2) Old bartering system may come back again. Neighbors can barter fruits and veggies without selling/purchasing from a store.
3) When the demand becomes high, more people will start working on fields and farms.
4) New group of people/associations will start like: orthodox raw foodist movement, ultra-orthodox raw foodist association, modern raw foodist group etc.

Christy.

Morning, Swazye. I so look forward to reading your e-mails – you make it all so fun! I had to google 5-finger shoes, though?!
What an interesting take on things – how different our world would be if we all ate raw.
Thank you for this insight.

Hi Swayze,
Well if everyone went raw we wouldn’t have so much trash in our land fills. It would probably be more like a giant compost pile. Have a great raw day.

That’s my girl! See, you are creative–and–as your dad, I can vouch for the “morning dew and sunflowers”.

Hi Swayze,
I’m just curious, how long did it take before you didn’t need deodorant/perfumes any more?

Swayze Reply:

Not long once I stopped eating salt on a regular basis. But of course, everybody is different.

If you’ve got BO and are looking for a non-toxic DO that actually works, go for Crystal (http://www.thecrystal.com/). I think they even sell them at Walgreens and similar convenience stores now.

I JUST saw Food Matters, so I’m new to this, but I was thinking the following while viewing that documentary:

If the world went raw we’d see a shift in our economy:
1) Pharmaceutical companies would have to stop pushing drugs and start producing vitamins and supplements.
2) People would spend less on drugs and sick care and instead spend their money on doing things they ACTUALLY enjoy–like sports, travel, nice clothes (that look good on fit bodies), and other hobbies they now feel good enough to partake of.

So I think “luxury” spending would actually increase.

I know there are more, but these were the first two that came to mind…

I don’t know, I can get pretty aggressive when it comes to my fruit. I’m liable to attack if anyone comes between me and my mangoes. :D

I would absolutely love it if everyone went raw. Then I could always find food available to eat instead of being left hanging if I go somewhere without my lunchbox full of salads and fruit, and pockets full of raw nuts. Though I admit it has been getting easier lately I am finding raw foodists in the strangest of places. We are everywhere!

What would become of fart jokes?

Swayze Reply:

Hmm, no more fart jokes. Is that a positive or a negative? I vote negative.

If the entire world went raw the economy and world markets would find TERRIBLE ways to make the most amount of profit based on the demand: it would be no different than our corrupt food system NOW pumping unknowing people full of chemicals and growth hormones. I don’t believe for one minute that the FDA wouldn’t ‘jump on the raw ship’ to pad their pockets: the economy would supply our demands. That aside, I believe the world would carry on in its crude ways only just shifting focus to a different prize. The new natural resource to fight over would be land and water. There would be a shift from countries with oil and natural gas exporting billions of dollars of fuel to exporting billions of dollars worth of farmed produce. It would get insanely expensive for people who live in colder climates to have fresh organic fruits and vegetables imported. The ideal land with the ideal climates would be over farmed due to the exponential demand on those farms…then next thing you know that sheer demand (not to mention expense) would likely force the economy to turn to technology and genetically modified produce to meet the quota thus shifting GMO’s and rapidly grown produce into the norm…heck the majority of the population is eating them now and not even AWARE! Thanks FDA for allowing this. And as for diseases, GMO’s will and ARE putting us in the ground sooner. The REAL EDUCATED RAW FOODISTS would still be a minority: it’s expensive, it’s time consuming both physically and mentally, and it’s a niche. If the world was truly ORGANIC RAW absolutely everything as we know it would be different, however I sadly believe, greed and money will never let us get there.

Except for one thing. If the entire world were raw, our vibrations and goodness would be raised in a positive way. In other words, negativity would be lowered and people would use their creativity in a better way to create a healthier life for the peoples of the world.
