I Lied Last Week…
As I mentioned last week, The Raw Secrets by Frederic Patenaude was actually the book that convinced me to go raw.

Well, this is not entirely truthful. You see, I had actually attempted to go raw some time BEFORE ever reading (or even hearing about) Frederic’s book.
But this was not the healthy, sustainable low fat raw vegan diet that Frederic encourages in his book. This was the unhealthy, unsustainable high-fat raw food diet.
This “Hollywood” fad raw diet did NOT make me feel great. Not only was it extremely time-consuming (I followed the recipes and meal plans in a well-known raw UNcookbook), but it was totally unsatisfying. I would finish a meal only to be starving again less than an hour later.
Plus, there was just so much fat! I already knew the benefits of eating a low fat diet, thanks to plant-based diet defenders such as Dr. Joel Fuhrman and Jeff Novick, and this approach to eating raw just seemed completely unscientific and downright crazy.
I actually calculated how much fat I was consuming each day on this raw diet and it worked out to OVER 40% of total calories! At between 30-40%, that’s more than the average American eats!
That did it for me. I gave up raw foods then and there and went back to my cooked vegan diet. Sure, this wasn’t giving me great results, but at least I felt better than I did on fatty, salty raw foods!
But my interest regarding raw food was still peaked. I kept researching raw, only to be bombarded by more fat, fat, and FAT-filled recipes…until I stumbled upon The Raw Secrets on Amazon.
I’ll admit, I was sucked in by the title. It just sounded too good to resist! I mean, “Raw Secrets”?! What secrets?! What am I missing?!?
I just had to find out and so I ordered the book. And the rest, as they say, is history. ![]()
So it was actually Frederic’s book that brought me BACK to raw. But not back to the unhealthy, full of fat and “superfoods” raw food movement.
The Raw Secrets showed me the right way to go raw, i.e. a low fat, high fruit raw vegan diet.
