Healthy Raw Halloween Treats

HalloweenSo I was trying to think of some healthy raw treats to share with you guys.  Something to share with your kids and guests…or just gobble up yourself, of course.

Then I remembered…I’m not creative!

Well, that’s not entirely true.

It’s just that I’m perfectly content digging into a banana or a bunch of grapes if it means I don’t have to dirty any dishes or silverware.

So…I’m dull AND lazy. ;)

Luckily, I know one low fat raw vegan who is totally NOT lazy when it comes to recipe creation.

Her name is Sarah and her blog is Living the Fruity Life.  I’ve been visiting Sarah’s blog since I first went raw and she’s always sharing the tasty-sounding raw recipes that she has been feeding to her family.

So I headed over to find some delectable raw snacks and stumbled upon this little gem:

Easy Mini Pecan Pie

  • 1 large, fresh Medjool date
  • 2 pecan halves

Directions: Remove pit from date. Stuff date with pecan halves. Eat and enjoy!

Yes, I know.  It’s not exactly the best combo.  But hey, it is Halloween right? :D

Here is another one from Sarah:

Simply Amazing Applesauce

  • 5 apples
  • 7 dates (soak 1 hour)

Directions: Chop apples with or without the skin. Place apples and dates in food processor or high-powered blender. Process until desired consistency is reached. Enjoy!

If you wanted to have the real toasty, cozy Fall feel, you could add a pinch or two of cinnamon and/or nutmeg.  A little bit of tartness from a squeeze of lemon would be nice, as well as some texture from dried fruit.

This next one was inspired by Sarah’s (different Sarah this time) Harmony sauce recipe:

Caramel Apple Dippers

  • 8 large dates, pitted and soaked for at least one hour
  • 1 tbsp lime (1/2 of one lime)
  • 2 sweet apples, sliced

Directions: Blend the soaked dates and lime in a blender.  You want a smooth consistency.  Dip apple slices into your delicious, healthy raw caramel sauce!

Hm…I wonder if you could pour the sauce over the apples and let harden in the freezer for a frozen “caramel” apple?!

This next one is all mine.  I found it in an old recipe document on my computer that I had completely forgotten about:

Ants on a Log

  • 2 tbsp raw tahini*
  • 8 ounces sweet apple, chopped (1 medium apple)
  • Celery, chopped into 2” sticks
  • Raisins or other sun-dried fruit

Directions: Blend tahini with apple (you want a very creamy texture).  Spread the tahini-apple mixture onto the celery sticks.  Place raisin “ants” on top.  So fun!

*If you cannot find raw tahini, you can make your own nut butter by soaking your favorite raw nuts overnight and then processing them in your blender or food processor.

I used to LOVE peanut butter and celery and this is a nice substitute.  Again, not the best combination, but a nice ocassional treat…especially for kids (and adults) who are used to Hershey bars and Skittles.

Well, that’s all I’ve got for you today.  I guess I’m a little more creative than I thought!

Still just as lazy, though. ;)

Happy Halloween, everyone!

P.S. The lovely Sarah (Living the Fruity Life) created a low fat raw recipe book to help fund some of her son Elijah’s therapy sessions (he has epilepsy).  It includes her own creations, as well as some from other raw foodists on 30 Bananas.
